Positano is vertical: the houses come down the mountain to the sea in steps, and there are two roads through it, not ten. The Via Pasitea – Piazza dei Mulini – Via Cristoforo Colombo axis is a one-way loop, driven in a single direction. It is not closed to traffic: it is narrow, and it is the only one.

Since 2024, entering the limited-traffic zone costs money for any vehicle with more than five seats including the driver — private-hire cars, taxis and private cars alike — under a council resolution upheld by the regional court in January 2025. Our van falls in that class: the pass comes from the council portal, and we tell you so before we set off.

What you see

  • The one-way loop

Via Pasitea, Piazza dei Mulini, Via Cristoforo Colombo: one direction of travel for the whole village. We know the road, and we know where to pull in and let you out without blocking the traffic behind.

  • The paid traffic zone

It applies all year and covers vehicles over five seats including the driver, private-hire cars and taxis among them: council resolution 37 of 21 March 2024. The pass is bought on the council portal, not at the gate.

  • On foot down to the beach

From Piazza dei Mulini down to the Spiaggia Grande you take the pedestrian route of Via dei Mulini: lanes and steps. Downhill going, uphill coming back — and the car stays where you left it, waiting.

  • The Marina Grande jetty

A jetty runs off the beach with boats to Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento, Salerno, Naples and Ischia. If you decide to move on by sea, we agree where and when to pick you up again.

Getting there with us

  • The Via Pasitea – Piazza dei Mulini – Via Cristoforo Colombo axis is one-way, not closed: the car does go into the village, but in one direction only.
  • Entering the limited-traffic zone is paid for vehicles over five seats including the driver, our van among them: the pass comes from the Positano council portal.
  • The Spiaggia Grande is reached on foot only, along the pedestrian route of Via dei Mulini that starts at Piazza dei Mulini.

Worth knowing

  • Closed shoes with a sole that grips: the village is made of steps and the stone is smooth, more of a problem going down than up.
  • There is no level route between the centre and the beach: if anyone in the group struggles with walking or stairs, factor it in when choosing where to stop.
  • From 1 August to 30 September 2026 the alternate-plate rule runs on the SS163 between Positano and Vietri sul Mare, 10.00 to 18.00. Taxis and private-hire cars are exempt.
  • On a bright day it pays to go down early and climb back late in the afternoon: same stairs, different effort.
