Amalfi

The cathedral at the top of the steps, and the coast that takes its name from here. The centre is a traffic zone: we drop you at the edge and wait there.

Amalfi is compact: from the water to the cathedral is a walk, and the old centre is a limited-traffic zone that cars do not enter. From 1 January 2026 the council revoked every old permit — green, red and white — and issues new ones, with an automatic plate-reading gate at the entrance to Piazza Duomo.

To set passengers down, private-hire cars book a drop-off slot on the council BusPass portal: two stops of five minutes a day, in the Flavio Gioia area. From there the centre is on foot and the car waits in the town parking areas, ready to leave for Ravello or for your hotel when you say so.

What you see

  • The historic-centre traffic zone

The centre cannot be driven. Since 1 January 2026 every permit is new: the old green, red and white ones were revoked, and the Piazza Duomo gate reads plates on its own.

  • Where we set you down

The passenger drop-off stop for private-hire cars is booked on the council BusPass portal: two five-minute stops a day, in the Flavio Gioia area. From there to the cathedral you walk.

  • The road the coaches cannot take

On the SS163 between Positano and Vietri sul Mare, coaches over 10.36 metres long and over 4 metres high are barred, under ANAS order 337/2019. Our van is 5.37 metres long: it takes that road.

  • Ravello in the same day

Ravello sits 350 metres higher, on the shelf between the Dragone and Reginna valleys. The climb is by car, and the two fit into one day: we drive you up and wait for you there.

Getting there with us

  • The old centre is a traffic zone and the car does not go in: the drop-off stop is booked on the council BusPass portal, in the Flavio Gioia area, and lasts five minutes.
  • The van then waits in the town parking areas — Flavio Gioia, Darsena, Luna Rossa. The Luna Rossa multi-storey, cut into the rock at the entrance to Amalfi beside the tunnel to Atrani, takes no vehicle over two metres high.
  • Since 1 January 2026 the traffic-zone permits are new, and the Piazza Duomo gate recognises plates automatically.

Worth knowing

  • From 1 August to 30 September 2026 the alternate-plate rule runs every day on the SS163 from 10.00 to 18.00; in June, July and October it applies on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Taxis and private-hire cars are exempt.
  • The cathedral is reached by the flight of steps off Piazza Duomo, on foot: if someone in the group does not do stairs, better to know before choosing where to stop.
  • In places the SS163 between Vietri sul Mare and Positano is under six metres wide: that is why ANAS caps the length of vehicles allowed on it, and why the coast is driven slowly.
  • Site tickets and town-centre access permits are paid separately and booked through official channels: we are glad to tell you what is worth securing in advance.
